McKaig Nature Education Center
The Geminid meteor shower is expecting to peak during the afternoon of Dec. 14 at McKaig Nature Center. Moon set 6:09 pm, sunset 6:37pm, so it will be very dark for enhanced viewing. Last year we saw 26 meteors with a bright moon in the way.
According to NASA, the Geminids are recognized as the "best and most reliable annual meteor showers." You can anticipate a starry night because they often exhibit 50 or more meteors per hour near their peak. A waxing gibbous moon will stand above the horizon and may dim the meteor streaks a bit. Meteors derive from leftover asteroid bits and particles and leave a dusty trail behind when they come around the sun.
Meet in the Roberts Elementary School parking lot near the Croton Rd trailhead.
*$5 per person donationd to McKaig Nature Center requested.
Pre-registration and a signed waiver are required.
The viewing will last approximately 1 hour, we will need to relocate to a property that boarders the nature center. We plan to walk by moonlight to get our eyes adjusted to the viewing location (4 minutes).
The will start promptly at 7:05pm we will drive to the viewing site. Be sure to arrive early! There is plenty of parking in the Robert‘s Elementary School parking lot.
Please bring your own beach chair or blanket, flashlight (though we won‘t use it), water bottle (reusable is best!) and comfortable, sturdy shoes or boots. Depending on the season, you may want to bring extra layers, sunscreen, and/or bug spray.
Looking forward to meeting you at the Croton Road trailhead by Roberts Elementary School.
