Walk in Penn’s Woods, a statewide coordinated event on the first weekend in October, encourages people across Pennsylvania to learn how their local woods work, see forests in new ways, and appreciate and love the forests so that we can all care well for them.

Walk in Penn’s Woods is for people across Pennsylvania to visit and learn about the forests that enhance our well-being. Forests are always working for us, providing recreation, wildlife habitat, beauty, improved water quality, clean air, wood products, carbon storage, and more.

We’re excited to share a wonderful collaboration with local resident and artist, Sharon Furda. As a frequent hiker and longtime visitor to our trails, Sharon feels fortunate to have a place to "trail walk and enjoy nature near my home."

Inspired by her time in the McKaig woods, Sharon will be showcasing her original paintings at The Gryphon Cafe in Wayne from October 5th to November 1st. As a token of her appreciation, she will be donating a portion of the proceeds to the McKaig Nature Education Center!

You’re invited to the opening reception on October 5th 4-6pm. The exhibit will continue from Oct 5th through Nov 1st.

We hope you‘ll stop by The Gryphon Cafe 105 W. Lancaster Ave. Wayne to enjoy Sharon’s beautiful work and support both a talented local artist and McKaig’s mission.

Embark on a 2-mile historic journey within McKaig Nature Center! Discover American history rooted in this very land, from the symbolism of the Tree of Liberty and the Pine Tree Riot to a 1731 Swedish Settlers Farm House. The hike culminates in tracing the route of the Continental Army‘s march to Valley Forge. Expect moderate elevation changes and some uneven terrain along serene trails.

Evening Orienteering Excitement!

Discover the thrill of navigation under the stars! Join us on Friday, October 25th with start times between 6 and 7:30p for an evening orienteering adventure at McKaig.

We‘ll have Beginner, Intermediate, and Advanced courses to challenge all skill levels. Beginners are welcome – on-site instruction will be provided to get you started!

Witness the largest "Supermoon" of the year on the trails:

The "Beaver Moon" will rise at about 4:42pm and will be about 17° above the horizon at start time.

The hike will last about 1½ hours and will hike about 1½ miles of moderate dirt and gravel (tree roots and rocks) trails.

Pre-registration and a signed waiver are required.

Meet in the Roberts Elementary School parking lot near the Croton Rd trailhead.

*$10 per Adult donations to our open space fund requested at the event, cash or Venmo.

• Gather your friends and family and explore over 3¼ miles of serene woodland trails. Our staff will be on hand at the "Beach" (map location White 21) to welcome you and lead exciting activities:

• Nature Scavenger Hunt for Kids: Little explorers can embark on a fun adventure to discover hidden treasures in the woods!

• Cozy Bonfire: Warm up by a crackling bonfire and a s‘more, perfect for a crisp autumn day.

• While the event is free, donations to our Student and Scout Projects fund are greatly appreciated and help us continue our vital work.

• We can‘t wait to see you outside!

Get ready for a spectacular celestial show! Join us for a Geminids Meteor Shower viewing over the McKaig Nature Center on Friday, December 12th at 7:30 PM.
This year, the shower is expected to peak between December 12th and 14th, and with the moon not rising until after midnight, we anticipate incredibly dark skies for enhanced viewing.
Past years have brought us 18-26 meteors, and this year promises to be especially bountiful!
Star guide included.
Registration is required to attend this unforgettable evening under the stars. $10 per adult, children under 16 free
