5 Steps to Earn the Brownie Hiker Badge

To earn the badge, Brownie Girl Scouts (grades 2–3) must complete one choice under each of the five steps: [1, 2]

• 1. Decide where to go
  • Find a trail: Team up with an adult to look up a local trail online or in a guidebook.
  • Ask an expert: Invite a park ranger or experienced hiker to talk about local hiking spots.
  • Choose something to see: Pick a favorite plant, animal, or tree to look for along the way and ask for a trail recommendation. [1]
• 2. Try out a hiking skill
  • Learn how to read trail signs (such as turns, split paths, or danger markers) or practice Leave No Trace principles. [1, 2, 3]
• 3. Pick the right gear
  • Learn what to wear and bring, such as sturdy closed-toe shoes, sun protection, and a water bottle. [1, 2]
• 4. Pack a snack for energy
  • Make or pack a fun, healthy trail mix or energy snack to keep you fueled. [1, 2]
• 5. Go on your hike!
  • Hit the trail with your troop or family and put your skills, gear, and snack to use. [1, 2]
